My First 2 Months In The Truck Camper
This is a Road Life series episode, meaning we'll drop the script, and I will try to give you some honest insight into what it's like living on the road full-time in a truck camper.
Recently, a friend asked, "What do you think, Jon, how's living in the truck?"
Well, I love it, but that's also a tricky question to answer. I've been at it for about two months and don't want to sugarcoat it. It's had its highs and its lows. I'm going through an acclamation period right now, which is to be expected.
Anyone who lives in a city or works a full-time job and transitions to a life like this must create a new sense of 'normal' for themselves. It's a lot of uncompressed time and a lot of quiet time. 90% of the places I go to don't have cell service, and since that's where I live, I don't start or end my day by doom scrolling, which is fantastic. But getting used to the disconnection has definitely been a challenge.
In all life transitions, we often experience discomfort that we try to rush through to get to the end. However, anything worth pursuing in life is worth enduring a little discomfort.
I've always had a little demon on my shoulder, constantly whispering things like, "Come on, let's pack up and hit the road!" I've been telling that little guy to shut up for years. I tried to suppress that urge, convincing myself I could just be a weekend warrior or take short trips, but that voice never disappeared.
I have a deep sense of peace now that I'm giving it a shot. I don't know if this feeling will last forever, but I'm happy that I'm out here trying. It feels like something I was meant to do, whatever that means. But it does.
In summary, after 2 months on the road, I'm adjusting and getting used to having quiet time and setting my own schedule again. It can be tough if you ever feel the urge to make a significant change in your life, especially if you have a stable job or a good relationship. I can only speak for myself, but taking this leap has been an enormous relief, even if it's not permanent. I'm happy to be out here giving it a try.
We will continue to have these chats, either weekly or bi-weekly. There is no set cadence; we'll just chat when it feels right or when I have something to talk about. I hope everyone is doing well.
Talk soon,
Jon
