I'm revisiting my all-time favorite book, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig, and I want to discuss it.

It's a story about a father and son taking a cross-country road trip on a motorcycle, told from the father's perspective. It's an incredible book with tons of sound philosophy. In chapter one, a quote has stuck with me for years. The father says, "We want to make good time, but for us now, the emphasis is on good rather than time, and when you make that shift in emphasis, the entire approach changes." He goes on to talk about avoiding main thoroughfares and freeways, sticking to paved country roads and secondary roads, and taking a leisurely pace. I think that mentality can apply to so much more than travel.

Often, I find myself moving through life like a checklist, rushing around trying to complete tasks. It takes a concerted effort to slow down and find enjoyment in the process of things. For example, consider doing the dishes. It can be as easy as savoring the warm water and appreciating your utensils or the bowl rather than rushing through just to complete the chore.

Most of us have the choice to take a more scenic route. Considering that most of our lives consist of many 'in-between' moments, it seems worth the effort and attention to notice and appreciate those times.

Anyway, this evening's message is to make good time but focus on 'good' rather than 'time'; hopefully, life will be a little more enjoyable that way. I hope everyone is doing well. I look forward to having more of these chats with you guys.
