Fly Fishing, Cooking, And Camping In Oregon
I don't have anything for dinner tonight besides rice, so if I want protein, I have to catch it. My tools are a Redington Classic Trout 9ft 4-weight rod, a 5x leader, and a single fly - the X-Caddis. For a complete gear list, check out the link below.
I start by taking out just enough line to fish right off the bank in front of me. On the very first cast, I'm surprised by a take - a nice, aggressive rainbow, but not big enough for dinner. I'm making short roll casts with no more than 6ft of line out and watching closely for a natural-looking drift. The next one is a little bigger but not big enough for dinner.
I moved up the river by a few hundred feet, and just as I was about to call it a day, I tossed out one more short roll cast. I got a bite, and suddenly the rod came alive. I caught a 14-inch rainbow trout, which would be our dinner. I felt so much gratitude and appreciation.
After cleaning the fish at the back of the truck, I take out the chuck box and oil the Dutch oven. Once it's hot, I fry the fish over medium heat. The fish was too large for my cast iron, so I removed the head and the tail and cut the rest in half. After one side is cooked and the skin is crispy, I flip them and cook the other.
