My 2025 Plans: Starting a Homestead
Time for an update.
If you’ve been following along for a while—first off, thank you. You probably know this all started with me documenting my experience living full-time in my OVRLND truck camper.. it’s been awesome but in 2025 there’s some changes coming down the pipe. I’ve been back home in North Carolina for about 5 months now and I’ve posted a few videos here and there, but for the most part, I’ve kept my head down and worked a normal job.
Even though the past five months haven’t been adventurous in the usual sense—no big road trips or truck camping in epic locations—they’ve led me to a new kind of adventure. One that I think will shape the future of this channel.
I bought land.
A few weeks ago, I pulled the trigger on nearly four acres of raw land in Western North Carolina with the goal of building my own homestead. I started quietly searching back in November, driving out to countless properties, scouring the internet for months, and running into hurdle after hurdle— bad topography, weird easements, harsh restrictions, crazy neighbors, undesirable locations.
My budget was small, and I struck out so many times that I was ready to walk away from the idea altogether. I even told myself that the last property I looked at would be the final one before giving up. And wouldn’t you know it—that last property? It turned out to be the one.
So why buy land or start a Homestead?
After spending last summer traveling and living in the truck camper, I had a lot of time to reflect on what I was really looking for. It all came down to a few core values: freedom, creativity, time outdoors, and self-sufficiency. Truck camping and life on the road embodied those values, but I realized they weren’t exclusive to that lifestyle. Land provides a reliable home base—a place to park the truck camper—but it’s also a space to build, grow, and create. And a homestead, well it offers that same sense of independence I found on the road, but with the added ability to put down roots and create something lasting.
Now, I know YouTube gurus always say to “niche down.” But this channel has always been a reflection of my life, and my life is evolving. I’ll still be truck camping—a lot. And traveling, too. But more than anything, I’ll be documenting this homestead journey.
And if those core values I mentioned earlier resonate with you, I think you’ll find this next adventure just as entertaining as the last.
So what’s next?
I’ve got a ton of work ahead. The land was left trashed and neglected by the previous owners. Honestly, it’s the sort of overwhelming project you don’t even know where to start. Some of the garbage might be salvageable, but a lot of it is just junk that needs to go. So, step one: clean up.
After that, I’m diving into my first project. There’s a 10x20 garden shed on the property. It’s in decent shape but it’s been empty for about three years, and the mice have definitely made themselves at home. Since I’m probably a few years away from building a permanent home, my plan is to renovate the shed into a tiny cabin.
Here’s the kicker.
I have zero experience with this kind of thing. I’ve don’t have a construction background, I’ve never maintained more than a small garden, never done anything remotely close to this. So, I won’t be teaching—I’ll be learning. And anything you pick up from these videos will either be something we figure out together… or something you learn from my mistakes.
It’s going to be a wild ride, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Hope you’re ready for the adventure.
